5 Things You Need to Prepare Before You Hire a Web Designer

Starting a website redesign is exciting, but it can also feel like a lot. Most people think they just need a "new look," but a great website is actually built on a solid foundation of content and goals.

If you want your project to go smoothly (and save yourself some back-and-forth emails), here is a checklist of what you should have ready before we even hit "start" on the design.

1. High-Quality Imagery

Your website is your digital storefront, and blurry or generic photos can make a brand feel "off." Before we dive in, try to gather:

  • Professional headshots: People want to see the face behind the business.

  • Action shots: Photos of you working or your products in use.

  • Brand-aligned stock photos: If you don't have custom ones, pick out a few that match the vibe you’re going for.

2. A Clear "About Me" (or Us) Story

This is usually the hardest part for people to write! Don't worry about being perfect, but try to get the basics down. Who are you? Who do you help? Why do you do what you do? Having this drafted helps me design a layout that highlights your unique story.

3. Your "Inspiration" Shortlist

You don’t need to know exactly how you want your site to look, but it helps to know what you like. Send over 3–5 links to other websites. They don't even have to be in your industry! Tell me:

  • "I love the clean fonts on this one."

  • "This site feels really energetic and bold."

  • "I like how easy it is to find the contact button here."

4. A List of Your "Must-Have" Features

Think about what the website actually needs to do for you.

  • Do you need a way for people to book appointments?

  • Are you planning to sell digital products or merch?

  • Do you need a blog section to share updates? Knowing these features early on helps me pick the right platform (like Squarespace or WordPress) from day one.

5. Your Brand Assets (Logos & Colors)

If you already have a logo you love, make sure you have the high-resolution files ready (like a PNG with a transparent background or a vector file). If you have specific brand colors or fonts you've used on your business cards or social media, keep those hex codes handy so we can make everything match perfectly.
